Long before the age of capitalism, Kempe Gowda, a regional chieftain of the Vijaynagar Empire builds a fort to cover their southern flanks in the early 15th century. During his rule, the chieftain turned this fort into a sprawling city of the Empire and crowned himself Kempe Gowda I, the King of Bengaval-uru (an old name of Bangalore).
Several of Bangalore’s present-day notable landmarks like the airport, the city bus station, and the central metro station are named after this noted erstwhile ruler.
A British Army Cantonment
Bangalore was an established army cantonment in South India by the British in the early 19th century. In 1831, when the British moved their regional administrative base to the cantonment from Srirangapatman, they renamed the regional cantonment to Bangalore. In later years, due to the pleasant climate of the city, it turned into a favorite settlement destination for wealthy Europeans, Anglo Indians, and missionaries
During the British Raj, Bangalore was a training ground for army sappers who were deployed in the First and Second World Wars. You can find evidence for this military heritage even today as several streets in the city retain its original army nomenclature like: Brigade Road, Infantry Road & Artillery Road.
The Silicon Plateau of India
After the Indian economy opened up in the 1990s, Bangalore was a hot target to set up manufacturing units, electronics plants, and IT companies. This gave the city its name; the Silicon Plateau of India in 2006.
In the ‘80s and ‘90s the city was also a hub for real estate. This led to the rise of several multi-storied apartment buildings on former army grounds and colonial bungalows.
From Bangalore to Bengaluru
In October 2014, after two hundred years since the first name change by the British, Bangalore officially changed its name to Bengaluru. Bengaluru is a modern version of the old Kannada name of the city; Bengaval-uru. The old name was anglicized by the British to Bangalore in 1831.
The Rise of Startups
In the early 2010s, Bangalore witnessed a sharp upward curve in the number of small businesses a.k.a - startups. By 2015, these startups were transforming the business sphere in Bangalore and the rest of the country with their futuristic business ideas.
